Winter 2012 Anime First Impressions: Bodacious Space Pirates

Plot Synopsis: “Marika Katou is a freshman in high school who lives on the planet “Umi no Akehoshi” somewhere in space. One day, she is told that her father, who she thought was dead, was actually alive until just a while ago, and was the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. And she also finds out that they need her, his heir, to be captain so that they can keep flying! Marika begins a new life as a high school girl, and as captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru!”

Thoughts: When I first heard of Bodacious Space Pirates it was being carted around as Miniskirt Space Pirates. Based on that title I, and surely many others, assumed it would simply be cute girls doing cute things while dressed as pirates in space. But then the first episode aired and everyone started saying how great it was, so I got curious.

They were right, it is a pretty good show. While I don’t necessarily share the sentiment that this will be the best show this season, I can easily say it’s one of the better ones. What I prematurely assumed would be a boring old moe space pirates show turned out to be a semi-serious space pirate show. The show does stumble into some cliches, such as the mysterious space pirates Marika meets getting jobs at her school, but it doesn’t treat this like some shocking turn of events. You knew it was coming, they knew you knew it was coming, so it happens and Marika just kind of smirks and we all get on with our day.

I don’t think there’s enough evidence to say it’s the best show this season, especially since it’s the only one I’ve watched so far, but I do think it has promise. One thing I can say for sure is since Satelight is working on this, we can at least look forward to shitty CGI space ships. Or maybe they won’t be shitty. Who knows. I haven’t watched a Satelight show with mechanical stuff in it since Aquarion so maybe they got better at the whole CGI machines thing.

Score: 4/5
