Plot Synopsis: “In the city of Kawakami— famed for its samurai heritage —second-year high school student Yamato has learned the value of a strong fighting spirit. He remains close to his friends, a solid group of four boys and three girls…but at the beginning of the new semester, two new girls join them, and things begin to change…”
Thoughts: I am not quite sure where to start with this one. Reading the plot synopsis this sounds like a harem show, but with what we were shown in the first episode this would not seem like the case, at least at first. What we get at first is a large battle that occurs between two classes in a high school. The battle reminds me a bit of Baka and Test just without the avatars, taking tests to determine your battle ability, or taking a test if you get beat. The first episode also reminded me a bit of Ikki Tousen just without the fanserive and history in it. In fact, I swear one of the characters shown in the first episode of this show was lifted straight out of Ikki Tousen just without the maid costume.
Enough about what this show reminds me of and lets getting talking about what we are presented with the first episode. Anyways it seems that two classes had a quarrel so the principal of the school lets them have this grand outside battle to determine the winner of this dispute. The students use non-lethal versions of various martial arts weapons (which I do know how to use) to fight this battle. The battle is massive and from what I can tell the school they must go to must be massive for the amount of people that are in the fight.
The music is good and sounds like it came right from a Soul Cailbur game. It is orchestra based and is grand to listen. The fight scenes that we are shown are well done, fun to watch, and is not boring to watch. The character designs are okay, but they are nothing special. Surprisingly there is no fanservice to be found here though I suspect that this will change with the later episodes. The voice acting was good though there were a few moe voice thrown into the mix just for good measure.
That being said, I do not know exactly to think of this first episode. There is not a lot of backstory given except that main character wants to date his sister even though she has turned him down before. There is a hint that there will be some harem elements present but we will have to wait and see. In the end Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!! does not show all of cards right away about what we may see, but there does seem to be potential for the show to be good show however at this point we will have to wait and see.
