Plot Synopsis: The Holy Grail War is a battle between several magi to seize control of the Holy Grail, which has the power to grant any wish. The magi take part in this war by summoning servants, spirits who will fight on behalf of their masters. With the fourth Holy Grail War on the horizon, the magi to take part are chosen and begin making preparations to summon their servants for the oncoming battle.
Thoughts: I don’t even know what to say about this first episode. I’m sure if you’re into all this Fate/Stay Night stuff it’s great to see all these characters and whatnot, but the whole thing is just kind of dull. It’s 48 minutes of exposition and magibabble, very little of which is particularly interesting. I’m sure there are going to be some great fights in future episodes, but all we get to see are people getting ready to go kill each other, but no one ever actually doing anything. It just doesn’t get off to a good start and since I’m mostly unfamiliar with Fate/Stay Night, save for the mediocre TV series and that god awful Unlimited Blade Works movie, I’m not really the target audience for this series. I’m confident it will get better, but this was just… blah. I’m hoping this first episode was double-length in order to get all the boring set up out of the way so they can get right into things next time.
