Azumanga Daioh: Where Are They Now?

It’s been a some time since the Azumanga Daioh kids graduated from high school. Here’s some “speculation” on where they & others are at.

Chiyo Mihama- Actually did study abroad. After graduating from M.I.T. at age 18 & post grad, she was employed in several joint Japanese/U.S. projects at the Lawrence Livermore Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasedena, Calif. Now works as an assistant tech advisor/systems analyst for an unspecified Japanese govt. think tank.

Sakaki- Married (Not to Kaorin.) & has her own successful veterinary practice in Tokyo. Relatives, friends & other investors were able to buy the former Gold Animal Clinic at govt. auction after its former owner mysteriously disappeared.

Koyomi “Yomi” Mizuhara- In house dietician at a large Japanese based corporation.

Tomo Takino- Pursued a career in law enforcement. Policewoman & an assistant liason between ICPO (Interpol) & Japans’ Nat. Police Agency. Has recieved several commendations regarding the energetic pursuit of her duties.

Ayumu “Osaka” Kasuga- Was a teacher for a while but later became a writer of several best selling childrens’ books. “My Best Friends’ Father” was on the New York Times best seller list for almost three years running.

Kagura- After winning two gold and a silver in the Olympic swimming competitions, she is now an athletics coach at Waseda University.

Kaorin- Before high school graduation, she tried to avail herself of the “internet service” of a one Ai Enma in regard to a “problem” she was having with a certain teacher. She balked at the price of the “service” & decided to tough it out. After recieving a degree in teaching, she became a science teacher at her old high school.

Minamo Kurosawa- Happily married with two kids. Now an in house physical therapist at the same corporation Yomi works at.

Yukari Tanizaki- Surprisingly enough, is also married & has a son. Met her future husband while exchanging car insurance info (Believe it or not, the accident was his fault, not hers!). Even more surprising, she is now assistant principle at the school. Though her driving habits have drastically mellowed, her style of teaching has not.

Kimura- One of Tomos’ first “collars”. Was to be tried on evidence/testimony supplied by Kaorin & several students. Adjudged mentally incompetant to stand trial. Now resides at a prefectural mental institution.

Maya- Getting on in years but still rules the roost at the vet. clinic.

Kamineko- Evil lives on forever.

Mr. Tadakichi- Gone but not forgotten. Though she has a pup sired by him, Chiyo-chan dearly misses him.

  1. Azumanga is one of the very few series where I wondered just what happened to the characters later. I’ll list my predictions for the main characters. Some of them are similar to yours.

Actually, I never thought much about Chiya-chan; I’ll go with your prediction.

Tomo does get a job at Interpol, but it’s dull desk duty.

Yomi became the lead character in Hataraki Man

Sakaki went with Maya to a vet college, but as the cat grew up and became wilder she was unable to care for it and it was taken away. But the fact that she had it at all gave her cred at the college. She became an expert in wild cats, got over her shyness, and now works for a zoo and, because of her knowledge, looks, and the fact that she has a rapport with wild animals, often appears on nature shows. But domestic housecats still hate her.

I had Osaka as a poet, but a childrens book author works just as well. Or she travels the world as a consultant for multi-billion dollar think tanks, where her “think different” mentality is valued.

    • Knowing Tomo, it won’t be dull.

Not familiar with Hataraki Man, I looked it up (Wikipedia is GREAT when it comes to anime!). Yeah, that’s Yomi all right.

What’s the fine in Japan for keeping endangered species without a license? Let’s hope Sakaki doesn’t end up like Steve “Crocklegator Hunter” Irwin. I like cats myself & Sakakis’ problem with them is what kept me watching the show.

It’s been thought that a spacey Japanese kid has a part in handling Charlie Sheens’ publicity but this hasn’t been confirmed.

  2. Good job. I like that Nyamo and Yomi end up working at the same place – they’re basically the same character at different stages of life.

I think Kimura went on to be High School Principal though.

    Children for Yukari-sensei? Sadist!

Maybe I’ll do my own version for the characters of Manabi Straight – wait, they’re in the future…

    • Never thought of that. Both are caring, contientious, & disciplined.

The Principle?! Yeah, you’d have to be a bit crazy to want a job like that.

Sadist? As in “rough on the kid” or “danger: more ‘Yukaris’ ahead”?

Had to look up Manabi Straight (I’ll almost swear by Wikipedia when it comes to anime.!). Now I get the joke. Not the kind of anime I’m into though. 2035? I’ll probably be dead by then!
